How and Why Vignette Settings are in PhotoToMesh
Vignettes have been added to PhotoToMesh to smooth out areas of an image which are near the edges of you solid model. Here is an example, with no vignetting of the image:
You see those grey triangles top right and bottom left? They are there because the image has been rotated by the image import wizard to bring the model's eyes horizontal. The original image was like this:
The resulting areas in the solid object are the flat triangular area you can see in top right and bottom left. PhotoToMesh provides a way of making those areas less visible in your final object:
The vignetting options can be used to smooth out unwanted detail round the edge of an image. In the main dialog of PhotoToMesh you have a button to modify the vignette settings:
You will get a dialog like this:
In version 4 the dialog is slightly more helpful. To illustrate what the various controls can do here I have changed to a white greyscale and I've also sharpened up the vignette
The resulting solid looks like this:
Vignettes are especially helpful with rectangular images on cylindrical solids (for example cylindrical lithophanes). You can either use no vignette as shown below, and the edges ofthe image are clearly visible on the cylinder:
If you use an elliptical vignette you can make the edges of the image disappear and the image blends smoothly into the cylinder:
In version 4 the vignette dialog is slightly more helpful than in V3, it shows the background grayscale in the preview:
As you can see as you move the Background Greyscale slider you can see the actual changes in the preview image. If there is a difference between the background and the main image borders, the borders will appear in you final object model, as shown by the two arrows in the above screenshot.
If you match the background slider to the edges of the image then the borders disappear, as shown below:
Remember to click the Recreate Model button after changing the vignette settings.
